I know what you mean; depending on who you get on the phone. I have encountered the attitude you describe; I've also encountered a few very gracious individuals at API.

There was another gent who helped me with some warranty service recently, and I can't remember where I jotted his name down. I'll see if I can drum it up. Great warranty service and parts replacement on a couple of units I bought second-hand and with absolutely no documentation.
