Not sure what's going on with your mixes (and there's a lot more going on in Drummerguy's mixes than I'll mention here)...but one thing you might want to experiment with on stereo tracks is delay. For example, if you have two overhead drum mics that are positioned pretty close to one another...try adding some delay between them and panning them hard...you'll notice the more delay you add, the more seperation you get, and the more it opens up...The trick is (if you're looking for width) to get the most delay without clearly hearing two seperate hits anywhere (with percussion).
Also, you can make phasing your friend, and "push" sounds further out of the stereo field (you might lose some tone and mono compatability, but you might like it...) Weird science.
