Well, the RNP and the 12ay7 are completely different preamps (not just in name, kimosabe). What character do you want? The RNP is supposedly very neutral, with an "extended" high-end - search around, you'll find audio samples. The 12ay7 is a tube preamp, so its sonic character will inherently be different.
I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm going to get either a Groove Tubes Brick or an Electro-Harmonix 12ay7 (probably both in time, actually
).
I've seriously heard things about the 12ay7 like "beats the UA 610, new classic preamp." And people laud plenty of praise on the RNP, but nowhere near the same level of hooplah. So, YMMV of course, but you just have to decide what character you want your preamp to impart on the stuff you record.
