In some parts of Canada it's mandatory that you own a gun because of the wildlife. Just like the US, most of the guns used to commit crimes in Canda are illegally obtained. My main problem with gun ownership here in the US is that all the laws are not uniform. A person banned in one state can go to another to get a gun. And as long as gun manufacturers keep dumping weapons with no serials on to the black market, the problem will continue. The cops even have a racquet where they are selling the guns they confiscate instead of destroying them, and they end up back in the black market. According to federal law, police departments are required to report the guns they confiscate and people who are receiving mental health treatment, but they do neither, and the feds have done nothing about it.
