+1 on the sm7b
got one in two weeks ago and i love this mic! it sounds really great... foam on and positioned above the lips a bit you get a nice chest rumble and great for rock vocals. windscreen off and it has a high fi kinda double vocal quality to it on my rig and a bit more in the highs. it a great sounding mic if you have a nice pre and stands with the big boys. also works great at not picking up background noise so very little treatment needed and great for acoustic players and other things in the room to prevent mic bleed. i like to just bring it in my living room and play my synth and the vocal takes are still usable. great on vocals, guitar, bass and can be used on kick drum if you want though some argue they rather use something else. if you do metal this mic is music 101... bands like mastadon have been using this a good bit in the studio so that might give you a feel for what it can do.
also i love the re-20 another great mic for vocals, kick drum, bass cab, overheads. i had one for bout 2 months loaned to me and this is my next mic to buy. radiohead has used this as a main vocal mic the last few albums. this mic though is better suited in a treated room compared to a sm7b if you want to really capture it great.
