seeking connection advice...

Hello! I'm not sure if this is the right place but I'll give it a shot...

I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1220 to do some recording while I'm living overseas (in Asia) and I feel pretty good about the pre's and the A/D is okay. I would like some help with two different possiblities... First, if I use the Mackie Onyx just for the mixer and the pre's and then connect it to a devoted A/D interface (let's say an Apogee Rosetta or similar) which outs do I use? I have more experience in the making music area than recording music... anyways, there are many different outs including "recording outs" which are DB25 female connectors (one for channels 1-4 and one for 5-12) I assume those would be the best but I'm wondering how to properly connect them. *8 channels is fine for me here...but I'm just trying to wrap my head around the math of it...is there a way to get eight of the 12 Mackie channels?

Next is easier to understand maybe... I would like to use some different pre's while using the firewire card in the onyx. I was wondering how I could run it through the onyx but NOT through the Mackie pre's.

I realize this is pretty product specific but if there is anyone who has some advice or a knowledgable Mackie user out there please give a guy a hand! Thanks!
