Yes. USB externals SUCK for audio recording and sample streaming because USB 2.0 just SUCKS for that purpose, well I mean the architecture is limited
compared to an internal sata or esata @ 3GB/s (even though you don't get that peformance) sustained throughput is better than bursts (USB 2.0)
