Update summary/yamaha pm700 "how-to"

So i'm on a time-crunch, but wanted to post a brief update/summary to my findings with this mixer... As stated in the original post, I was having an issue where it would power up but the VU meter needles did not move and no sound would come thru.... I tested thoroughly and initially could not figure out what was wrong... LONNNG story short: It turned out to be 2 blown 1.5AMP 250V fuses INSIDE the mixer (go figure). Of course I had no idea that this model had 5 fuses inside of it (aside from the externally-accessible main power fuse), but you live & learn. Replaced the 2 fuses & PROBLEM RESOLVED... I now have sound & moving vu needles :-).

The main problem I ran into when getting inside the unit is that I absolutely DID NOT know the proper way to open it up. The standard owners manual sadly does not include this info and I did not have access to a service manual. I went about it COMPLETELY wrong on the 1st attempt, unscrewing screws that had NOTHING to do with opening this unit, buying $70+ dollars worth of materials (power drill, screw extractor [for a screw that had a stripped head]), and I spent a whole lot more time on it than I would have had I known the PROPER way to access the internals (which, embarrassingly enough is VERY simple). Hopefully this information (with included pictures) will save someone some time in the future:

HOW TO ACCESS THE INTERNALS OF A YAMAHA PM700 MIXER:

VERY basic: There are four bolts underneath the front end of the unit (2 on each side [see picture])... These bolts hold the top portion in place, so when you remove them, the top opens up like a car hood (you have to lift it from the wooden sidings). Once open, you'll notice that there are brass metal brackets on each side of the unit that will prop the top up for you, as seen in the picture.

Inside, you'll notice the power supply circuit board with the 5 fuses (see picture). In my case/as stated, 2 of these 5 fuses had blown (there are 3 1.5AMP 250V fuses and 2 1.0AMP 250V fuses)... I'm no expert in electronics, but this was actually THE source of why I had no sound & no movement from the VU meter needles. Take a look at the close-up shot for a better view of the power supply circuit board.

Finally, take a look at the picture of the hinges on the back of the unit. One hinge type (4 total) supports the top as you open up the unit, and the other (2 total) supports the removable console "flight case" lid.

There you have it folks!!!! Checked every channel & while the pots are scratchy, every channel is working and the "talkback" channel is SOO cool!!! I'm so happy that I didn't have to take this guy to the repair shop. I'm so glad it was something as simple as a blown fuse... Sadly, my ProTools hard drive went out shortly after resolving this issue (just my luck, lol)... But once i'm back up & running, I can't wait to start running my mixes thru this!!!! I'll also be using one channel as my mic tracking channel until I can afford a Neve 1073. I'll keep everyone updated & i'll try to post more often!!!!! If anyone else has this mixer and can share some thoughts, i'd LOVE to hear (hit me up :-)... Till next time, have a great one!!!!
