Let's grade your first sentence: minuses for "PLUGIN," instead of "plug-in," and for not putting your punctuation inside the quote... possible plus for using an apostrophe for plural on the acronym, but even that's controversial.
In reality, proper grammar, terminology and even technical jargon, are moving targets being constantly eroded and replaced by common usage. Oh, and "foolness?" That's not even a word... yet, anyway.
So, if you can't find a reference in (The) New Yorker or Elements of Style, I wouldn't worry about it. Language lives and breathes. I recommend "Do You Speak American?" and "The Story of English" by Robert "Robin" MacNeil.
