I also think it depends on what your usage is/will be for the thing, and what you plan to get out of it. I only use OS1 myself... I say 'only' because there's both OS2 and OS2XL which provide quite a bit more function - but OS1 is highly functional enough for me as it is.
The upgrades work one by one, so if you wanted to you could purchase OS1 and load it on, and install OS2 (you can flick between them both) but just use it to play about and try out. All purchasing does is give you the ability to save, so I permanantly have OS2 on eventhough I barely use it, as OS1 is enough for me.
