Compression won't make them sound more or less real as it doesn't change the performance. If you are happy with the way they sound then that's fine. But as someone who does a lot of drum programming for my band and other clients, they don't sound real to me.
I don't really have any tips. I've been a drummer my whole life and I obsess about drums so to me it's just about knowing what a real drummer does.
I'm sure their might be some thread about realistic drum programming on GS though.
