I tend to use the 201 a lot for top snare. It sounds good. The main things that put it over the top:
Footprint- Small and easy to position under a hat or between a rack tom.
Pattern- Very good rejection/ easy to isolate program
Build- Very well built. Direct hits from sticks aren't a problem.
Sound- Can handle super high SPL with clarity.
It's by no stretch of the imagination the best sounding mic for a snare drum, but it's other attributes pretty much make it a winner most of the time...
