There is a distinction between keyboards and synths. Typically synths have keyboards built in though. It was more of a commonly used distinction years ago when keyboards just had basic sounds, and synths (with keyboards) had tweak-able sounds.

If someone doesn't know what midi is its fair enough that they ask. If they are after a focusrite saffire I wouldn't expect them to know everything about everything

Its fair enough to ask if software bought in a Mac Shop will work on a PC, sometimes it will (when the software has a cross platform license) sometimes it does not (when it has a platform specific license), so its a perfectly reasonable question.
