Re release mod compressor - I asked Jeff this directly, and his reply was (I'm sure he won't mind me putting this here - its all good for ppl to know) :

The Variable Release mod for the Compressor adds a Release control and changes the function of A/Rx10 to an auto-release. This Mod changes the operation and also the tone of the compressor a bit (all about how you use it). In use, they both have strengths - with the 1 knob control it's very immediate to turn up the Drive and then quickly find a sweet spot on the ATTACK Knob and just go, but with the Release control version you can get more detailed.

I got mine earlier this week, and am building up an 18v AC supply so I can run a few of these babies...my first was the modded one, but I'll grab another without it. My studio partner is thinking of getting 4 and mounting them in the center section of his 70's neve console..... fun!
My initial reaction for this comp is that you can't go wrong. I say it is destined to become an instant classic. At twice the price it is a bargain - and your audio will constantly thank you for it.
