I have a bunch of midi/cv converters around the room, and a couple of things that output CV gate too... so no MIDI is not such an issue for me.
if it's your only synth, or you don't have any CV sequencers or midi/CV converters it might be a bit of a pain, but it's integrated perfectly with my CV gear. in fact a 303 driving the SEM is a match made in heaven.
