If you look at my initial post I use the word 'guidelines' so nothing is set in stone. Generally speaking though, I really believe that most of the best, most masterful music doesn't seem like it was put together by somebody. It's seems elemental. Now we all know that elements
are made of smaller component parts
but we don't see that. All we perceive is the character of the whole. There are musically successful exceptions of course but very few IMO. One I can think of off the top of my head is U2's 'Mysterious Ways' the song really shouldn't work and they only just about pull it off. You can hear them struggling to make it work and it's very much creaking under its own weight structurally and rhythmically.
