That's a load of BS. First, most EQ plug-ins use the exact same algorithm, whether they cost $1,000 or are freeware. More here:

Second, "normal" (not linear phase) digital EQs work the same way, and do the same things, as analog EQ. So the idea that one type sounds better than another is silly. If an EQ is functioning properly, it will do what you ask of it and nothing else.

Finally, I proved using a null test that digital EQs do exactly what they're supposed to in my AES Audio Myths video. The null test examples start at 53:40 into the video.
