Gotta disagree on the Sansamp, which I also have (I think of it more as an amp sim, also, which is why I didn't mention it). Not NIN territory at all. Whoever said that they were probably doing a synth bass is likely right. I don't know their setup intimately but if I had to guess. That said, when I want to imitate synth lines, overdrive pedals like the Sansamp aren't going to cut it. You need the long sustain and square wave goodness of a fuzz.

Pods are pretty easy to operate. You switch between presets that you make. They come with presets but they tend to be overprocessed.

But of all the pedals mentioned, the RAT splits the difference between overdrive and fuzz, so if you want one pedal (I still say two, but maybe I shouldn't be trusted) that would probably be the place to start in terms of trying stuff out. If there's a music store in your town, it's likely you could walk in and try it out. And they're a lot cheaper than fulltones.
