I have some experience with the TLM 103, which I used to own. It would be good for your purposes, I think. It's got very high output, very low self-noise and a fairly big presence peak. Another $1000 and under mic you might consider is the AKG C414BXLII, which I also owned. Like the TLM 103, it's designed to cut through the mix, but unlike the TLM 103, it's got multiple pick-up patterns, bass roll-off, and attenuator. You might also consider the Audio Technica 4060; it's supposed to be great (tube circuitry, I think); I've never used one though.
