Haha!... Usually whatever works is good.

As a rule unbalanced to unbalanced and balanced to balanced. Actually you can use balanced cables to everything, with the exception of active guitars and effects pedals. (Because they use a switch in the plug that shorts to the shield to turn the units on) But you should never us an unbalanced cable on a balanced input and some outputs.

This gives me an idea. I shall write a paper covering this topic and put it on my site in the next few weeks.
