The automation is for the analog faders. Its not a control surface where you can bank etc.
Think of it as a seperate automation system for the console, that uses 16 tracks of your DAW to store it, as apposed to a seperate PC built into the desk.
Having said that, some kind of fader control layer wouldve been a nice touch, but when I used to have my Mackie MC, I only ever used the transport sections, so it suits me perfectly.
