make sure you try to make sounds that imitate stuff from around where you live.
i try to make the sound of a tram going round the corner into the depot at the end of my street. theres not much wildlife where i live. cats fighting, truck horns, v-8 car. notice the word "try". i only have a go when no one can hear me.
another tip i got from someone who had just come off a stage playing, was that he learnt to play on the pipe from the vacuum cleaner. it does the same job, and all you have to do is raid the cleaning cupboard. maybe not as romantic.
also i wouldnt worry too much about the taboo of a female playing it. if you follow that logic thru then i dont think anyone other than initiated tribesmen should be playing it. but i eat pork, meat on friday, drink alchohol and i'm pretty sure i offend all the other religions without even realise it.
