I think it's great that you are creating your own preamp and I'll try to help.
They are in SUCH sonically different ballparks it's still hard to give you any IMO valuable input yet. I'll try though: #2 sounded muddy compared to #1, but had some nice lows that I liked. If they had been the same distance, setup and performance then #2 is just too muddy. But, again #2 could be a nice pre recording a muddy source. #1 was a little too thin sounding for my taste (but, I prefer colored pres, so keep that in mind when reading my comments, I have a bias already). So comparing these two to each other was difficult with such a drastic difference in tone. Like comparing a Les Paul to a Telecaster.
Can you find a nice pre that sounds similar in tone and coloration to yours and I can comment on which sounds better then?
