I actually have some tiny vinyl sticky dots that are just the ticket for this sort of thing. All kidding aside, I'd never use a permanent marker to label piece of equipment. Although, they can be used to touch-up front panels and the like, but there are better methods. I've had to deal with a lot of abused gear, and turned many victims into survivors.
