Older bands know, a la Weezer's Red Album. It was purposely mastered quieter.
Most mastering engineers tell bands or producers flat out what their doing and what they can and can't do. Every time I go to get something mastered, my mastering engineer asks me how I want it done. Multi-band compressors aren't mastering, they're just tamers. A lot of work is still done in mastering.

It is usually our own faults when something is brickwalled, and we obviously choose to do it. It is ultimately our decision to end this faux "war".
Everybody I talk to at least claims to be backing off...

And every mix that comes through here, the artists get The Lecture when they start asking about Louder.

I do believe I am doing my part; but not to Save The World.

Just to save my mixes!
