I don't know how common they are, but I've had a set of the tiny Cambridge Soundworks sub/sat speakers (I think they're the MicroWorks model) as my 3rd or 4th monitoring option, & they're invaluable. I've even mixed a record entirely on those speakers! They sound a bit odd, with no high end at all, but they image remarkably well, & mixes that sound balanced on them translate really well to other listening environments.
