This is good advice.

I like metal snares for metal and hard rock, simply because they generally have more to offer in terms of volume and attack, and tend to resonate more (as opposed to wood snares, which are usually drier sounding), which helps them sound big when they have to start competing with huge guitars.

A few nice metal snares:

Keplinger Steel / Iron
Tama Bell Brass
