Tama's Starclassic kits are pretty much unbeatable for the money. The hardware is amazing, they stay in tune, and they sound great. I do a lot of metal/hardcore/hard rock, and most of my favorite heavy drum sounds have come from Starclassics.

I'd recommend hunting down an all birch kit if you're doing faster/more technical stuff and need more punch and attack, or a bubinga or birch/bubinga if you're going for a bigger, deeper drum sound. The maple Starclassics sound great too but don't have the attack of the birch or bubinga kits.

Don't forget to budget for a great snare drum!
