Why not learn a real skill whilst also learning some dedication and discipline? Yeah and learn that true sustainable respect from peers comes from authentic hard work. |
I actually agree with you. I played games (NES, then SNES, then N64, computer) like crazy when I was little (~8-10 years old). Then by the time I was 15 I realized I was completely wasting hours/days/weeks/months of my life. I switched almost all my energy to music, as well as other, more 'productive' endeavors, and I certainly think I'm much better off all these years for it.
Video games can be fun. But they can also been a largely pointless void.
At least with physical games (actual sports - basketball, baseball, etc - or even Wii Fit) you can say you're getting physical exercise, which is fantastic in our obesity-filled world. What can you say you are getting out of an XBOX gamepad or stupid plastic guitar? Maybe a bit of a diversion and perhaps some coordination exercise, but I think there are better ways to get both.
On the other hand, though, if gaming continues to grow, I would not be surprised if eventually people may actually be able to game for a living. Already, in Korea, they've had for years giant gaming competitions with 6 figure prize winnings. Supposedly the top gamers are actually quite famous over there and 'train' for these competitions by gaming full time. I imagine we will start seeing similar competitions over here.
Regardless, I'd rather play my actual drums/guitar, go out with some friends, work out, etc.. But I suppose some people are simply sedentary by nature, whether they want to be or not, and that will never change.
At this point, I'm not particularly opposed to gaming. I actually just ordered a USB NES controller so I can play some of my old Nintendo classics like Metroid and Mega Man on my laptop for some retro nostalgia.
Anything in moderation is usually fine. It's just that when it starts adding up, day after day, you will start paying for it.
