I love DP... started using it when I got my 828mkII and have loved it ever since. Sounds like your teacher is on crack... or at the very least shouldn't be teaching because he clearly doesn't know his way around it.
Especially funny because the DP manual is actually really good.
Realistically, all DAW's are pretty much the same these days (except maybe Live) so it's just a matter of picking the one that seems the most intuitive.
