I have a late 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s U87. If your old ones sound too different they need to be checked on. The vintage ones have lower output/more headroom and maybe a tiny bit more air. But otherwise they should be 95% the same mic sonically. Also there are no mods to make a U87ai closer to the vintage ones. The korby and klaus mods make the U87 a completely different mic. I have a korby one too.
Having said that, I'm not doubting what you're hearing. Maybe the newer U87ai you tried was from a bad batch ...
