So I guess punching in and comping takes is out of the question, too?

Recorded music can stand on it's own. Great recorded music is a worthwhile goal and great achievement, irrespective of whether anyone intends to ever perform it live. If DNA as a new technology allows and inspires artists to make great recorded music, so much the better. Anyone who thinks every recorded sound must be able to be duplicated exactly by a human in a live performance... by all means, please feel free to NOT use DNA. But also know you're missing a great part of what recorded sound and music is capable of. Technical command of an instrument and/or music theory does not neccessarily guarantee great music. I've heard many technically accomplished virtuosos play (and score) boring music.
