Its not a summing box. More like a 3RU console!
It's a collaborative effort between Great River and M-A called the MixMaster. It has been designed to be used with a Digital Audio Workstation, and facilitates a desirable WORKFLOW for the FRONT and BACK END of the DAW. The unit at AES was a first version proto, the second proto will hopefully be finished in December. We used all the feedback and input we received at the show to add features and improve the final design.
Channels 1-4 feature transformer I/O based microphone preamps switchable to line inputs with Inserts/Direct Outputs per channel; all with individual level control, pan, and two AUX sends. There is a mute and solo switch on these channels as well. Channels 5-20 feature a different transformer topology. These channels simply feed a set of transformers before the master buss amplifiers. The idea for this entire layout is for many reasons, namely for tracking. The idea is to use the mic amps, [which are newly designed Great River Mic amps by the way] patched directly into your AD converters, controlling signal strength, and effect routing all while monitoring the signal without latency. When mix time comes, you might stick your crucial elements on channels 1-4 and use the DAW to mix up to eight stereo stems. Channels 5-20 can be assigned Hard Left, Center or Right with the Channel Select Matrix. The master section offers a full throw Master fader, a Control Room Output/Volume Control, And Insert Send/Return with Bypass, as well as a Cue output with a Talkback. At the show I was using channels 1-4 panned odd and even to volume match the stereo output of a RADAR V and a JCF DA8-V with mirrored signals.
