There have been so many things (over the last 25 years) that have "taken my mixes to the next level" (I'm still not where I want to be yet, but I'm always getting closer - zeno's paradox), but I guess the most significant one was one of the earliest I learned:

EQ instruments in the mix - not solo'd.
