Home/self recording is nothing new...
John Lennon recorded "Imagine" at his house. Technically the recording sucks. Artistically it's great.

All true. But we have a culture of people that really want to record music. When I got out of high school, producing other artists was the best way to go (leaving aside that my band sucked) because you had many more swings. In the future (or now) the best bet may be to stick with that band and record it yourself.
