im hoping, presuming, its the latter... an example of such type of device is Avalon U5, which has both MIC and LINE outputs, so u can use it with a pre afterwards, or just go direct, depending which sound you prefer.

These DI preamps are active or passive . The passive needs an external microphone preamp source and the active works normal .
Phoenix Audio Nice DI is active .
