A lot of singers seem to like the SM7, not condenser but seems to work quite well with this type of music.

In regards to condensers, the AT 40 series are quite popular also. It doesn't really matter the style in my opinion, it depends on your voice and what sound you want. If you don't have a very good sounding room then I would go for a dynamic mic.

In regards to preamps, I think that the Avalon 737 is used quite a lot for hip hop and R n B vocals.
