As far as plugins I've used both Amplitube and Ampfarm and I think AmpFarm is far superior as far as sounds go.
I really didn't like Amplitube at all.
Really if I don't have a 'real' amp for a track, I use the POD (POD Pro depending on where I am).
The POD usually does a good job.
