421s are great
SM57s work fine, too
604s are good, too

414s sound good, but are expensive overkill
I have a pair that were destroyed by an an amature drummer.
I re-built thm and got a feree

I like the post about using ELA M251s....

As if you have enough to record toms with them.
If you do you are a fool if you use them in close.
Of course they'd sound good, but WHY use them?
