Using this setup for our next release. Maybe I should add a dedicated room mic, because I really like how the figure 8 of the royer adds more dimension to the close mic sound by picking up some of the room wash. The 421 went into the Germanium, while the Royer 121 went into the Avedis MA5. We used the backside of the Royer for a little more bite.
To align the phase relationship we put the guitar pickups near a laptop to get some funky midrange interference through the speaker, then tried to null it out as best we could with one of the mics having reverse polarity. Then flipped it back. Also tried Mr Wagener's 'middle of the head' trick for kicks too
