I'm pretty sure the "tranny/trafo" setting actually puts a small transformer in the signal path or maybe even parallel to the actual signal path. If you open up the unit you can see a small (Xicon IIRC) transformer on the PCB. I bet it was chosen for it's saturation characteristics.
