I've used the 4038 on lots of things: e.g. mono drums overhead, trumpet, banjo, fiddle, electric guitar cabinet. The duet preamps work great with the mic for all those things and many many more, however for quiet finger picked acoustic guitar, quiet vocals etc. the duet pres got too noisy for me once I got over 60-65dB of gain approx. It may not be an issue for you at all if you're not going to be using it on those sources.
In terms of how the mic sounds, you really need to try one for yourself, sorry....
