Hi,
I have an idea for a social networking site that would connect sound artists around the world.. what I would like is to sound this idea out and see what people think. Please jump in if you have any ideas or feedback, and if you would sign up!
Oh no! I can hear some of you say.. 'Another twitter, facebook, myspace, MI7 etc etc..'
Well, there are a few reasons why this site may be a.) different and b.) useful!
Let me give some background..
I just graduated from a Sonic Arts course in London where my experience of online facilities and communication convinced me that a resource such as this could be incredibly useful for:
- an online gallery space / archive for sound art (much of which ends up on headphones in galleries anyway)
- a place to set up online projects using technologies such as Jack and Max/MSP (live networked performance etc)
- a (free) place for filmmakers to search for sound people
- a place to post field recordings and sound library files
- a discussion forum
- one place to get news updates and articles about exhibitions, events, opportunities and provide links to (or syndicated content from) other sites such as this, filmsound, resonancefm etc
As with other social networking sites there is the idea of community ownership (at least in terms of content). I would be using open source software, customized and designed for this purpose.
My focus for now is on sound art in particular, partly because I want to further my academic research, connect with artists around the world, and also to investigate the potential for sound art experienced outside galleries, which often curate badly or insufficiently this type of work.
GS is an amazing resource and I am a huge fan. I realize sound art may not be everyone's bag here and this is a more music and recording-oriented forum so hopefully some of you out there will get where I'm going with this..
