I wish I'd found it for 95 cents a square foot. I searched forums for ideas, called every HVAC and hardware supplier/store I could think of, and searched the internet, and all that netted very sparce results.
Various forums, including those on gearslutz, had a few ideas but nothing near me. Local suppliers and distributors sounded like they had no idea what I was talking about, barring one: Austin Acoustical Materials. They don't keep it in stock and would have passed shipping charges along to me.
As you said, it's not to be found online for less than $70 for a pack of six panels. Home Depot ordered it for about the same price, but didn't charge me shipping, so it seemed like the best solution for me. If anyone else can find it locally for the prices you named more power to them. I just wanted to throw an option out there for other people that were having as tough a time as me finding the stuff.
