Steely Dan at Hammersmith Apollo last night... Amazing set as to be expected, they opened with a super-laid-back slow-groove almost unrecognisable version of "Reelin' In The Years"
Rest of the set was great - every song was great and recognisable and it would be easier for me to list the hits they didn't play - that would be "Do It Again," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "FM."
Particular standouts were "My Old School" and "Deacon Blues," with the 8-piece band plus 3 backing singers in full groove mode for the latter.
Anyway, surprise time - first encore, Donald Fagan admits they haven't played the album version of Reelin' In The Years "for years" (and they'd already played another version of it of course!) - but since Elliot Randall lived in London they might as well bring him on to play it with them. On he wanders.
Jesus C****, the house came down... amazing!!!
He stuck around for Kid Charlemagne, too, which closed the show.
One of the best gigs I've seen ever!! |
