Great point - if insert points are all patchbay'd up, then no reason not to use them as direct outs - of course you wouldn't get the channel EQ and Insert in the path, where I guess proper Direct Outs would be post EQ?
Maybe thats what Greatgreatriver is wanting - direct outs post EQ and post Insert? Of course to me that doesn't really sound like 'direct' out
