Of course, it is not because of twitter that she made the $19.000 in just 10 hours. Twitter is just a tool. It could have been any kind of tool, even mailinglists, RSS feed, myspace, facebook, youtube, vimeo and the whole web 2.0 crap.
The main point why this succeeded is because she is a leader. She leads a tribe of people who share the same interest. Interest in their leader. Now because she understands that people are following her and she leads her followers, she was able to do so.
A very good example of tribe marketing.
Of course, no record company would have thought of this. And for a simple reason: they don't lead tribes… Their loss…
