I like making tempo maps that I figure out during pre-pro, so if i use some sort of grid, we adjust it to the band's feel.
I also like letting the band "freestyle" in sections, especially fills, and then creating a new downbeat on the grid where the kick drum lands.
Billy Bush always looks at me with trepidation when I say the word "freestyle"...ha!
