The Apogee Ensemble is an external convertor you can use via ADAT with your 003. This would give you better conversion while still using Pro Tools.

But if latency is really bothering you the only real way to get around it it PTHD or native with PDC. (Excluding PTLE with Mellowmuse)

You're now deaing with the eternal PTHD/PTLE/Native debate.
