Actually, that P.E. can often be helpful in turning some guitarists' trebly, "real" tone into the beefy wallopp they expect and are used to from the records they listen to.
Ribbon mics with their fig.-8 pickup pattern exhibit even more proximity effect than other mics and have a softer top as well.
